Mini Book Reviews:)

Every once in awhile I read some books that do not warrant a full fledged review. I still like to tell you guys about them so I do little mini reviews:)

His Finest Hour A Biography of Winston Churchill: ARC provided by the publisher. Coming out September 1st 2010. I really enjoyed this book. It sheds some new light on Winston Churchill the man. I actually learned some things in this book I didn't know before. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves history, WW2, or reading about great war heroes

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum: I love The Wizard of Oz. I have all the Barbies, the monopoly game and anything else I can find, lol. I read the book many years ago but I guess you could say my love is over the movie. I refuse to watch it on DVD, VCR or anything. I watch it on TV around Thanksgiving. That is tradition:) Anyway, my MIL bought the whole Wizard of Oz Collection on the kindle so I started re-reading them. I had forgotten how much different the book was from the movie. I bet you would be surprised at what color the slippers really are:) If you haven't read them you really should pick them up. They are very good and will be part of your most treasured collection.

These is my Words Review

These is my Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 (P.S.) These is my Words by Nancy Turner: Based on the real-life exploits of the author's great-grandmother, this fictionalized diary vividly details one woman's struggles with life and love in frontier Arizona at the end of the last century. When she begins recording her life, Sarah Prine is an intelligent, headstrong 18-year-old capable of holding her own on her family's settlement near Tucson. Her skill with a rifle fends off a constant barrage of Indian attacks and outlaw assaults. It also attracts a handsome Army captain named Jack Elliot. By the time she's 21, Sarah has recorded her loveless marriage to a family friend, the establishment of a profitable ranch, the birth of her first child?and the death of her husband. The love between Jack and Sarah, which dominates the rest of the tale, has begun to blossom. Fragmented and disjointed in its early chapters, with poor spelling and grammar, Sarah's journal gradually gains in clarity and eloquence as she matures. While this device may frustrate some readers at first, Taylor's deft progression produces the intended reward: she not only tells of her heroine's growth, but she shows it through Sarah's writing and insights. The result is a compelling portrait of an enduring love, the rough old West and a memorable pioneer.

My Review:

I picked this book due to the fact it got over 244 5 star reviews on Amazon. I love books like these and thought for sure I was going to love this one. I didn't. I didn't loathe it but I didn't love it. By the 70th page their had already been two deaths, a rape, several Indian attacks, etc. There was way too much action in a short period of time which left me to wonder where the author had left to go. Nowhere. The rest of the book was very predictable. While One Thousand White Women was predictable it had enough heart and surprises to keep me going. This book did not. I almost felt with every page I had already read the story. In the end I put the book down and never thought anymore about it. Never a good sign as far as I am concerned. When I finish a book I like to think about it and reflect. There was nothing here to reflect on. I would not tell you not to read it I would just say don't expect a lot and be prepared for a ho hum experience.

Under this Unbroken Sky Blog Tour

About Under This Unbroken Sky

• Paperback: 352 pages
• Publisher: Harper Perennial (August 24, 2010)
Spring 1937. Ukrainian immigrant Theo Mykolayenko returns to his wife, Maria, and their five children after nearly a year spent in prison—two hundred and seventy five days and nights, each a scratch on his cell wall—for the crime of stealing grain. Scrapping to make ends meet during Theo’s absence, the Mykolayenkos had been living under the care of Theo’s sister, Anna, on the harsh and unforgiving Canadian prairies. Now, home at last, Theo has determined to make a better life for them all. Channeling the willpower that enabled him to survive drought, starvation, warfare, and Stalin’s crimes in the Ukraine, he takes to the land with great resolve.
As the crops grow, so do the strength of his children and Theo’s fierce pride. But family peace is quickly disrupted by the return of Anna’s rogue husband, Stefan. Tensions between the two men heighten as Stefan increasingly treats Theo like a hired hand and demands a cut from the sales of the crops. Soon, the family is splintered—with brother pitted against sister, son against mother, and in a disturbing twist, a new mother against her newborn.
Building to an unforgettable climax, this is the story of an immigrant family trying to find their way in a new world, where small and innocent acts have enormous and catastrophic consequences. It is a harrowing tale of fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sisters, and brothers whose desperate hands till the earth, while equally desperate minds plot much darker deeds. Everything that the Mykolayenkos have hoped for, dreamed of, worked for beyond exhaustion is now at stake—their loved ones, and their lives. Rich in emotion and suspense, this sublimely crafted first novel hails the arrival of a superbly talented literary voice.

My Review:
I just cannot say enough good things about this book. The heartbreak, the emotion, and the story was all so real. While reading this book I was no longer in my hometown, I was on the Canadian prairies. Sometimes books like this romanticize earlier times. Really never touching on the bad or the horror of the time. I can't imagine living in that time or place for real. This book didn't romanticize anything. I hated, I sympathized, I criticized, I shunned, I loathed, and I loved at different times in this book. Even after I turned the last page I was still thinking about the characters and where they took me. I highly recommend this book make it into your fall/winter reading pile. Make sure you have plenty of time because once you start you will not want to stop.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading

It's Monday what are you reading? I am reading lots of different things. I am trying to quit smoking and I can hardly keep my mind on anything. So I am switching books all the time lol:)

So here is what I am reading:
Under This Unbroken Sky: A NovelUnder the Unbroken Sky by Shandi Mitchell. This so far has really captured me. It is one of my book blog tour books. I am very anxious to share this with you all:)
Washington: A LifeWashington by Ron Chernow. Another one of my book blog tour books and I am loving this one too. At a whopping 817 pages it chocked full of information about Washington. I have learned so much and I am afraid I will never do this book justice.
The Book of Unholy Mischief: A NovelThe Book of Unholy Mischief by Elle Newmark. This is another book blog tour book and I find myself not being able to concentrate on it. So I believe this one may be put up just for a bit. It has been a great book so far but I am just not feeling it.
Mansfield Park (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. This is not going well, lol. I just don't understand mine and Jane's relationship. She is one of the most creative writers of our time yet I cannot get interested in her books at all. I will continue on and hope it will get better:) If not, I will just have to bid Jane a fond farewell.

That is it for this week:) What are you reading? Please leave me a link to your post. I love to visit back but sometimes when I click on your name it won't give me your blog. So please leave a link:) Have a great Monday everyone!

Where Have I Been?

I was so upset to come on here and find I lost a couple of followers. I know it is my own fault because I have not been posting:( I do have a good excuse though. In addition to planning a trip to Walt Disney World and quitting smoking, I have challenged myself to finally read a book by Jane Austen. Yes, I am ashamed to admit I have never read a book by Ms. Austen. I tried to read Little Women but couldn't do it. So I am trying again:) The book I am reading is Mansfield Park. Not only am I reading it but I have also been writing a little diary about my experiences with the book. Kind of like a "My Experience with Jane" type of thing. I am sorry if that has taken me from posting. I just thought it would be a neat thing to write about and maybe something interesting for you to read:)

So that is where I have been but I plan on being back in full swing next week. I have some book reviews and fun stuff coming up:)
